West Cliff, Santa Cruz, CA

We are off on our photo adventure.  I am really excited about sharing this set of photos.  Most of the excitement is because the "beach" allows me to find and photograph the more abstract subjects.

For starters, I updated the panoramic view of Elkhorn Slough.  Previously, this panoramic view was generated from my 3Mp Olympus camera.  The new one is from my 8Mp camera.  It is also shown on the "Elk Horn Page" as well.

What better way to begin then to open up with a trip to the beach with a friend and with cameras in hand?  There is something about wandering around a beach looking for the unexpected and seeing it frequently.  For starters, the background is a photoshop modified picture of the Capitola Beach.

The pictures:

When you're at the beach, anything can strike you as being photographable.  A post sticking out of the water.  A bikini clad woman.  An unclad woman, but I am off the beaten path.  The point is to find shapes and photograph them.  This first photo is the remnant of a pier, slowly but surely eroding away to the beating waves and incessant pounding from millions of granules of sand plus or minus a few billion grains.
This is Natures way of tickling our visual perception, providing a piece of abstract art for us to ponder.

Can you imagine a more interesting place to photograph?  I can't.  The beach always interests me as a photographer.  This second picture is the background before being processed with photoshop.  Cool, isn't it?  The bird is an apparent Juvenile Sandpiper.  He is keeping a wary eye on me.

More Abstract photos above.

The ravages of oxidation on metal piers.

A rock and a Grebe

I SAY, are you still with me?
An ordinary Rock Dove, AKA a city pigeon.

Nope, don't think so, I otter go.

I like the water wake the Sea Otter is making as much as I like the Sea Otter.
This one was swimming near a boat dock in Moss Landing, CA
I was able to get this shot as it passed under the walking ramp leading to the dock.

The Capitola, CA wharf and happy hour at a watering hole.  The faucet drips fresh water and the pigeons drink, win, win.

Every body knows that the ocean gives up steam when the sun sets in it.

Here is positive proof that there is indeed, steam.

All of the pictures in this series were shot with my digital SLR Canon EOS 20D camera and one of two lens: a panoramic zoom lens; EFS 17-85mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM and my reach out and touch somebody zoom telephoto lens the; EF 70-300mm 1:4-5.6 IS USM.  (The EOS 20D camera has a 1.6 lens multiplication factor so the 300mm lens really looks like a 480mm lens, zoom wise.)
