The Elk Horn Slough

Going to Elk Horn Slough on the middle of a Sunday afternoon seemed like a good idea for starters but this idea was hampered by the "But first" syndrome. Yes, I am a frequent victim of this malady. You know the condition, you're walking out the door and you spy a sock on the floor, but first I have got to toss the sock. |

The other white meat, a white pelican. These birds look prehistoric to me and I always marvel at the way they take off, like a puddle jumper, like they are never for sure if they are going to get air borne or not. |

| Isn't nature amazing? The top photo with that unusual eye. What was "HE" thinking? That the pelican needed a large eye to spot fish from a mile up? The middle photo is a common Western Grebe. I think that they party too much as evidenced by their red eyes. I came around a corner on the trail I was hiking and startled this packet of pelicans into flight, proving that if needed, they can do a very short take off. Too bad they don't have an air traffic controller, to coordinate their exit. "You must wait three minutes before the next pelican is allowed to take off." Yeh, right. |

| An experiment with night shots, a new interest of mine. The first one is of the wharf in Capitola, CA and the second one, just pointing up. |

Mission Peak, Fremont, CA. The baylands from up high, a rock formation near the top of the hike, a hang glider in November, hence the body wrap. I watched this hang glider, hanging for over an hour and a half, just riding the updrafts, never losing altitude, seemingly aware that he could do this for days if he wanted too. His altitude was about 2500', mine about 1700'. This photo to the right is the uncropped version to give a better idea of his altitude. This was shot with my handheld 400mm lens so the objects in the photo are farther away then they appear. |
