Road Trip 2007

Volunteering in New Orleans

Chapter 10

The Brass Band!

Previously I noted that there was no brass band welcoming my arrival.  That all changed yesterday on Wednesday, August 8.  To back up a little, on Tuesday, the organization I am working for; Volunteers of America, asked me if I would like to be interviewed by a local TV station.  I agreed readily and they told me what to expect.

On Wednesday morning, I arrived at the group home I have been working at, did some painting, tried various solvents out to remove stains on a bathroom floor, put together a computer from Dell for one of the residents and about 11:00, the TV crew showed up.

The crew was the "Traffic" girl and her camera man.  They prepped me on what to expect, set up the camera and started shooting.  I answered a few simple questions and then the interviewer reached down for a box and informed me I was to receive an award, denoting selection of me as this weeks "Hero" for New Orleans, a weekly event on this TV station.  I was very thankful and surprised.

Randi, the young lady presenting the award to me, reminds me of my daughter Christa.  They are both communications majors and both cute.  I asked her if she would advise my daughter to do this kind of work and her comment was, "It is an awful lot of hard work."  From our discussion, it appears to me to be 90% perspiration and 10% glamour.

This segment is suppose to air on Friday the Tenth of August.  I am curious about how much of the interview makes it to do actual air time.  If I get a copy of the air time, I will post it.
